NIGERIA Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday opposed the scrapping of the
Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, and Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, perceived to have proven records of success.
The Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation of Federal
Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies, led by Stephen
Oronsaye, had recommended the scrapping or merger of some government
agencies whose functions overlap.
NLC, in a statement issued by Acting President, Comrade Joe Ajaero,
also said to avoid labour issues such as job losses that might occur as
a result of the report which recommended the reduction of 263 statutory
commissions to 161 and scrapping of 38, the Presidency should invite
Labour for discussions on the issue to avoid unnecessary tension.
The NLC argued that the recommendations of the committee had thrown
up serious Labour and social challenges that might lead to massive loss
of jobs, which could have disastrous consequences for the country.
It stated: “Now that the Report is out and a government team to
produce a White Paper has been constituted, the NLC finds it imperative
to raise the social and Labour issues that will result.
“It is necessary to clarify that the NLC believes that the cost of
governance needs to be reduced although we think this has to do mainly
with government expenditure on political appointees and hangers on.”
