Crisis, broke out yesterday in Mile 12 market, Lagos, during a foiled
attempt to overthrow the incumbent chairman of the Arewa Perishable
Foodstuff Association, Alhaji Haruna Mohammed. Consequently, scores of
persons sustained varying degrees of injuries and foodstuff destroyed.
Trouble as gathared, started at about 9am after a man simply
identified as Alhaji Seidu stormed the market with some gun weiding
individuals to oust out Mohammed.
Thier attempt, reportedly met stiff resistant of the incumbent
chairman, thereby resulting in a free-for all, during which dangerous
weapons were freely used.
The fight, destrupted commercial activities at the popular market as
traders hurriedly locked up, to avoid being cut in the web of the
warring factions.
But for the intervention of policemen attached to the Ketu Police
Division as well as operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, the crisis
would have reportedly escalated.
Police patrol vehicles and an Armored Personnel Carrier were stationed near the market to forestall a recurrence.
Most of the traders who objected to the invasion, protested , carrying
placards which read, ‘We say no to imposition’ and ‘We do not want
Seidu’, we do not want Saidu, Mohammed is our choice’.
